Very much worth a read... as is the later link to the Nosterfield Diary.

This document provides an assessment of the soil features (both archaeological and natural in origin) that have been identified, excavated and recorded during the removal of topsoil deposits at the Ladybridge Farm Quarry site. The archaeological investigations have been carried out under the terms and conditions set out in the written scheme of investigation (WSI) which was prepared by Mike Griffiths & Associates in consultation with English Heritage and North Yorkshire County Council and approved by the local planning authority in October 2008 (Timms, 2008).

Topsoil removal commenced at the north-western end of Area 3 on the 9th September 2009 (see Figure 2), fieldwork being completed on the 21st December 2009. It is expected that as the phased investigation of the excavation areas progresses the results from the work will be incorporated in a single document, which will act as a generic account of the results of the archaeological investigations within the application area.

The work has been undertaken by Mike Griffiths & Associates on behalf of Tarmac Northern Ltd. In accordance with the WSI, the fieldwork has been undertaken in a transparent and open manner. This has involved a weekly update to a site diary on the Nosterfield website (www.archaeologicalplanningconsultancy.co.uk/thornborough (http://www.archaeologicalplanningconsultancy.co.uk/thornborough)), along with the digital photographic archive also being made available during the progress of fieldwork.

Clearly every site should have a decade or so of public protests, enquiries, public meetings, comments from EH on the six o'clock news etc etc and then every report would be up to that standard....

...which just goes to show the problem archaeology currently faces, if that is what is needed to produce a good professional report...

Just a bit of a shame they didn't really find much last year - was working stripping on a sister quarry at the time actually finding stuff but severely handicapped by Ladybridge having been sent all the best plant, ditching buckets, drivers etc cos it was in the public eye (apparently it was stripped like a billiard table whereas mine ended up like the Himilayas), bet it all happens again this year:face-crying:

Have you not tried 'educating' your machine driver in what you need. I've certainly worked with a few people who have delivered very efective verbal motivation (i.e. b*ll*ckings) to under-performing machine drivers.

You could also try telling your client that he won't get his planning signed off (or might be made to take remedial action - that he'll have to pay for) if the Curator thinks the site has been left in an unfit state.

Don't forget to check their ticket before you start. If he's 'forgotten' it, tell him to go home and get it.

Not if using a big rock bucket with the teeth removed hanging off the front of a very small machine, it just see-saws which isn't good if trying to strip onto loose gravel......hey, still found more than the Ladybridge crew :face-approve:
