Hi everybody
I wonder if there is a real possibility of getting job in archaeology in U.K. (temporary or permanent). What is employers attitude for foreigners experienced in so called here commercial archeaology but outside U.K. I`m going to try next year anyway and wish me good luck. By that time I will have about 1 year and a half of experience (mainly excavation).

Greetings! I had the pleasure of working with a young lady from Poland last year-she had no real problems getting digging work and from memory, has been doing so for over a year here and just landed a good job with a unit in London. One problem she did encounter-as the nature of temporary digging contracts in the UK can be anything from weekly to monthly, she had to re-apply for a new work visa every time she got a new contract. To say the least, we learnt some good Polish swear-words from her! Good luck and welcome.:D

Thanks for optimistic news
Anyway I am going to spend this season on excavation in Poland (very interesting neolithic site) and after that I`m going to attack.;)

And one more question... do you know if the diploma of University (Jagiellonian University exactly) from Poland is accepted in U.K.?

Have no idea! Suggest a web-search for UCAS who should be able to advise at least.:D

Poland is a member of the EU and therefore you have a right to work in the UK. Discriminating against, I think, overseas experience is therefore illegal except for certain chartered professions.

Experience illegal? So if someone gives me job in archaeology it would be illegal? I don`t understand.

Icearch, where are you going to dig in Poland? The weather is always uncertain but be prepared for heat und sunshine as well as rain, wind, storm... temperatures from 15 to 35.
And have a nice time :)

I think he meant discriminating against you on the basis that your experience is overseas would be illegal

Thank´s for that Maltaire,

I´ll be at Kalisz for 2 weeks and Klimy for 2 weeks. The weather sounds good, [8D] at least compared to digging in Iceland ;), where the rain, wind and storm are more likely than the sun.

Thanks Lucy
I see, and I would expect that... but without trying I won`t achieve anything, so I will do my best and we`ll see...
At least I will check how much is worth my English ;P

Hi Maltaire-Good to hear from you again! I think that Midge and Deep are trying to let you know that it can be extremely difficult to maintain a career in archaeology in the UK. It really can be a struggle especially in the first few years. Unfortunately, there are plenty of extremely talented and skilled archaeologists that leave the profession for pastures new. There are other jobs that can provide for a more stable lifestyle elsewhere. It can be a struggle at least in finding continuity in employment but, if you look hard enough, the jobs are there...How are things with you?:D

Quite right Troll mate, although we as archaeologists do find some unusual stuff, the elusive full time permenant job is a bit, well elusive!!!!!

Well Maltaire,
I'm a foreigner with relatively permanent job in UK. You just have to go for it and make the most of your opportunities when your here. Try for some of the local government or national organisiation positions. They are far more transparent in having to comply with UK and EU employment laws so you would be less likely to encounter problems over your Nationality or language skills.

Good Luck

Thanks for advices.
I just wanted to know if trying to find job in archaeology in UK makes any sense. From your answers I can see that it is difficult but not impossible. And I suppose it is less impossible than here, in my beloved homeland..
So far I didn`t apply for any job because there are still things that keep me quite busy in Poland and I can`t just leave it.
