if you want to dig in the states you have to go through some university, or a field school. I would look up field school on google and you will find some sites. The thing is, they don't pay you, usually you have to give them money to dig, Unless you are funded by some University or Company. You could try some random university home page and go into their archaeology department, they might have some links that you could use. Most of the students over there go out of the states to dig. The ones on the west coast where I have been are always muddy and wet, a lot more shell sorting, animal bones, and ceramics than anything else. It really depends on what type of archaeology you are looking for, native american tribes are completely different from one state to another, in washington you would be digging on the coastline, the tribes who hunted whales, and so therefore mostly dealing with whale bones and wood, but if you go inland you would be in the prairies, in the middle of nowhere. If I were you, I would look into Mexico or South America, maybe some Mayan or Inca site. Much more interesting and way less expensve.

One way of getting you`re trowel wet in the states would be to volunteer for the Forestry service.They take on archaeologists for anything up to 18 months, provide accommodation and a daily stipend for your belly needs. Think you have to be a citizen of the USA though cos clearly, everyone else are deemed to be a threat to national security.......:D
