I think the biggest prolem with the story is that the image is likely to be of a man - from memory there was a hairstyle that appears on images of kings (coin heads and the like) that had the curled up ends on the hairbut I can't recal which particual bit of the medieval period they come from - the early Henry's and Stephen ring a vague bell though.

I agree it could be a man, but probably not a king (no coronet). But this is just a nothing story making a mystery for no obvious reason. Surely the Kent County Archaeologist knows that he only has to pick up the phone and call Ian Betts at the Museum of London and the tile will be identified in seconds....

.....It reminds me of a story (in the Guardian I think) a few years back when a reporter interviewed an archaeologist/conservator about the restoration of the Chapter House floor at Westminster Abbey. There were a series of baffling questions about whether access to the medieval chapter house was restricted to the brethren or whether it was ever used by the aristocracy for feasting etc. Whatever the answers given the reporter ignored them all to come up with the idea that the chapter house was a place of drunken debauchery and where we got the expression from the passed out minor aristos, (and his headline) of a Knight on the Tiles.....

With peace and consolation hath dismist, And calm of mind all passion spent...
