For those interested in canals/industrial archaeology...

Notts County Council's Community Archaeologists have just finished a 3 week excavation in Jacksdale, Nottinghamshire. We managed to time it so we would be digging in some of the worst winter weather for 15 years! Despite that we had an excellent turnout, and fantastic support from the locals.

The report won't be available for a bit yet, but i'll post links to some of the info here so people can have a nosey.

The excavation was to investigate a series of cottages, built by the local ironworks, a canal basin, and a tramway. Jacksdale is a comparatively modern town, and its fortunes and industry have been intimately linked with coal, iron, trams, trains and canals. We excavated a whole miniature diorama of the early days of the town.

I'll pop some photos up when i get a mo.

We'll be putting up something a bit more 'archaeological' on the community archaeology section of the website this week.
