Just wanted to know how UKDFD /UKDN / NCMD talks are going...?
I am now (apart from having some vicious toothache) starting on the CoP appendix when I get it roughed out... will post it on here and the UKDN site for comment and consideration...
Thanks to all who are making a real difference..
also... I would very much like to come down to the Rally at T'boro... with any archaeologists who would care to join me... for a few days of liason / geting to know each other... field walking etc...
Will also be looking at the UKDFD - SMR/PAS requirements for data transfer... :D I have to confess I am really really busy jsut now.. so have to divide my time.. so can't move as fast as I would like... but I am working..
hope alls well
Another day another WSI…

Nothing has happened as far as Steve-B phoning me. I gather he's been very busy with UKDN matters. There are also indications that the UKDN (or members of) are in the process of starting another Metal Detecting organisation.... Excellent news if true, and about time.....:D[8D]

Hi John
Apologies for not calling yet.
Your correct it has been busy on the UKDN late, several of us are getting used to our new roles and it has also been quite busy in the shop.
Nothing will be happening on the UKDN unless the members want it to, unless you mean the new EFID site? But that is nothing to do with us at all.

One of the UKDN guys attended a recent NCMD meeting (more as a P.R. exercise than in an active role) overall the impression he got was positive.

That sounds positive...
What was the general mood...
I notice more and more that detectorists are seen as an integral part of the whole 'heritage' bundle.
Not so much detecorists being under archaeologists but archaeologists, amatuers, detectorists, museum staff, local groups, history societies etc being ALL part of the same - each contributing to the whole.

It does seem to be coming round that way.
The mood was not confrontational in any way, there were apparently a couple of gripe but these appeared to be more about etiquette than specific problems as ssuch.
Peter McCrone was mentioned as having met with the NCMD as the DEFRA liaison bod with the detecting community, again positive feedback on that score as well.
I know some have chosen to misinterpret my remarks I have made in respect of the hobby being more self determining, but I feel as long as the hobby has a real and genuine say in its own future, is permitted to help formulate developments (and given the right to object to and block suggestions/plans that could have a detrimental effect on the future of the hobby), and is not viewed in a subordinate manner but as an equal share holder, then I do not see why the relationship between all groups can not develop further and show some good and positive results.
It is something we are keen to promote on the UKDN.
I agree that we are being seen more and more as part of the 'heritage bundle' one very good example of this was explained to me by Liz Wilson our local FLO.
Currently there is a major dig taking place in Chichester, the old Shippams site. This is the first chance that a major dig has been able to take place within the city walls.
Apparently, the use of detectorists on site was actually written into the planning permission!! How cool is that?

Probably a bit nit picky Steve but as an old Chichester archaeologist, I couldn't quite let that go by. It's actually the first large area dig to take place within the city wall for a number of years. There were quite a few in the 1970's and 1980's:D
Good to hear about the condition written into the planning permission too. Makes a pleasant change and hopefully we'll be seing a lot more like that. For what I've heard the developers have had a very positive attitude towards the archaeology at that site:face-approve:

Hi Beardstroker, not nit picky at all thanks for the correction. It would have been more correct of me to say that it is the foirst one ever that faces on to one of the main central streets.
