View Full Version : Arboretum Project

I am setting up a one-day public archaeology project in an Arboretum, and would like to use a metal detector as part of this to search for old plant/tree labels and such-like.
One or two locals may bring their own metal detectors, or we might acquire a cheap one for the project.
Has anyone used metal detectors in a primarily wooded area to look for these sorts of things - they might be lead, iron, brass or composite of several metals? Any advice or tips on which sort of machine is best for this type of work?
Any views or ideas much appreciated. Many thanks...

BAJR is spot on.Buying a detector has many pitfalls...from cheapo chinese that won`t find a nail in an ironmongers through to machines that are so technical you`ll not know where the on off switch is !!
Much better to find a willing experienced volunteer !

Thanks for the comments. Your map didn't seem to work a few days ago but that might have been my computer!
We have a local volunteer lined up - I'll let you know how we get on.
