Its starting to get grim in Lincoln, but they do say that every cloud has a silver lining- you might have to wait a bit for the cloud to appear, but there is always hope!
As I like to say (to annoy people) "things could always be worse":face-huh:

Wow I may move to Lincoln. At least 2 of our local units are said to have laid off all their diggers. And these were pretty big companies.

Thanks for finding that Unit... this is disturbing... if not surprising. It reflects the poll, where this current situation will hit archaeological units. The question is... how are we preparing for it.. and what are we doing? I am moving into public archaeology - what are others doing?

Finding another job! If it's not in archaeology it'll have to be something else!

Yes-nice one Unit, though it's not how I usually like to make it in the newspaper!

The story uses the word redundancy but I wonder if they were not renewal of contract lay offs.
Dirty Dave Lincoln

Hopefully it will be just a temporary lay-off, but then again how long is a piece of string?

Redundancy payments only apply legally if you've been in a company for 2 years or more, so those payments don't apply to many people (don't forget, however, that 'rolling contracts' can still count).
I agree, hopefully it won't be long for anyone. As I've been saying to a number of people recently, it's going to be 'interesting' when things do eventually start moving again and suddenly all this 'on-hold' work suddenly takes off....

And when it does take off again thats when you find your having to be on 2 or more sites at the same time! talk about 3 busses coming at same time[:o)]

Thanks for pointing that out Unit, I hadn't seen it before.

When it ends, as it surely will, I guess it will be retrain and hope that age discrimination doesn't restrict my new career. I just hope that I can find a job that needs a few of the things I have learned in archaeology. And I don't mean the fluffy meaningless things like "ability to work with others". Harrumph.

I did have glasses-but then I accidently sat on them!
How long before the only archaeology being dug up is in peoples tatty patch in their back yard?

I don't have a tatty patch to dig up. :(
One important thing to note, it's not just a crunch on the 'diggers'. There are redundancies/layoffs amongst the consultancies as well.

It seems to be striking all the way down the line.
You could get an allotment-but even they are getting scarce as more and more people want to grow their own food.:face-huh:

Tried that, no go. On the other hand (an interesting twist I thought)- I was once involved in the excavation of 'dig for victory' allotments......:D

Done a few jobs where nothing turned up and was asked "why are you recording, and taking photos of nothing?"[?]

'My boss told me to, personally I don't see why I'm here.' Drops everyone in it. Heard that one too!

"To prove that it's nothing, so as you don't have to pay for me to come back!" usually goes down well. Alternatively, "to prove that I was here doing my job, so as you don't have to pay for someone else to come back and do it again!"
