A group of archaeologists are trying to establish if Norsemen brought Christianity to Caithness before St Columba arrived on Iona.

The question has arisen after a dig at an ancient church site at the coastal village of Dunbeath.

Pottery dating back to the 6th Century has recently been found in the area.

Did the pots contain communion wine or wafers? Seriously, is this not just the BBC getting it horribly wrong? Any Christian activity in this period would surely be Scots Gaelic or Pictish, not Norse as they were far too busy being Pagan and this is pre Viking age anyway. Still it's a fantastic sounding site. Shame the media always make such a fudge of things. Can anyone post a link to any site reports?
