Preserved German army bunkers provoke a strong reaction from the Danes...

...and a somewhat later East German one:

That German bunker is phenomenal, Paul. Its made up of units the size of three storey buildings, suspended on hydraulic rams. A mate of mine visited there a few months ago to take photographs, see his directory 'Bunker 18/5001a' on http://www.roofunit.com/

That is a fantastic website - some great photos, and not just of the bunker. Thanks for the link!

Incidentally members of 'subterranea britannica' are organising trips to the German bunker before it is finally sealed for ever in October.

I hope they will publish a catalogue of the 'artefacts' found in the Danish bunker. Some of the everyday material - stamps of Hitler etc, as well as the basic kit, looks like it creates a phenomenal picture captured in time. Has anybody said if they know precisely when the bunkers were abandoned?

The article says 1945, and that the solders were stationed there for 5 years. As Denmark was invaded in '40, that tallies up nicely. I bet those soldiers were cursing that storm: it seems to have brought the end of an extremely easy posting.

Its interesting, the perspective some people in Europe have over WW2 remains - i.e. get rid of them. Difficult for us to appreciate, perhaps, not having been occupied (apart from the Channel Islands of course).

Norway has some quite substantial remains from the German occupation of WW2 including railway lines, factories, roads and tunnels that are still utilised today. In Trondheim there is a vast James Bond-type concrete submarine hangar (DORA 1) that proved impossible to demolish after the war and is currently in use as a shopping centre and bowling alley I believe.

Like the U-Boat pens at La Rochelle, re-used as U-Boat pens in 'Das Boot', and subjected to a fairly devastating British bombing attack that was probably far more effective than any of the real ones.
